![]() ![]() Mari picked up Sunny and carried him into the house, making sure to quiet her steps so she wouldn't wake him up. ![]() she really messed up didn't she? She would make it up to him, he deserved that and much more for dealing with her. She let her brother know that they were here but. Eventually her family made it home just before 10:00 PM, Mari still had a chance at the Butter-Pecan ice cream. The rest of the car ride was largely quiet save for the radio her dad had turned on, most of the songs were a 6/10 or less in Mari's mind. Mari smiled and nodded at their praise while Sunny looked out the window on his side and half-heartedly accepted the praise in his own silent way. As they started the long drive back home her mom and dad said something positive about their performance and that they would celebrate with a party during the weekend. Her parents along with Sunny were waiting at the exit and together they made their leave. Mari smiled and waved as they left, a pit in her stomach as she realized they called it "her achievement". Thankfully the crowd eventually dispersed and her friends said their goodbye's, promising to get her something for her achievement. She could wait, he probably needed some space from her anyway. Mari spotted Sunny hiding away from everyone, she considered talking with him but she would just draw a crowd along with her with all the attention she was getting. She was just about done, both emotionally and physically, with today. Mari was exhausted, she mentally stopped herself from grating her teeth together and pacing around in a circle. Smile, hug, smile, hug, smile, hug, smile, kiss on the cheek, look pretty and smile. Mari quickly stepped off the stage, giving one final bow before leaving, and ran over to where her friends had assembled.Īccept congratulations, look humble, pose for a picture, give an inspiring word or two, pretend she loved every second on the piano, pretend that she cared about getting first place, pretend that she was glad her parents were considering aNoThEr recital for her to attend. Smile, wave, smile, wa- oh right she should step off the stage now, Sunny's already gone, being on any longer would look foolish. For some reason those kinds of questions always bothered her. Thinking about this only made her emotions on her face more evident so she shoved the thoughts aside for later, she needed to look like the perfect daughter so nobody would ask dangerous questions like "are you ok?". To others his expression was virtually identical to the one he wore everyday but only Mari knew better. He was upset, VERY upset, it was probably the first time Mari ever saw him like this. ![]() Mari momentarily looked down and cringed at the memory, Sunny was a quiet kid but the sheer void of nothingness that emanated from him during the car ride spoke volumes to her. Yelling at him to do it over and over until he screamed at her to shut up. She had sacrificed so much time and effort to get here, her relationship with her brother had been damaged because of her desperation to get it perfect. more excited about that? Happy? Anything besides sheer boredom and anger? She didn't need to be a psychic to predict what was going to happen next: She would win first place, everyone would congratulate her, get whatever the prize was, go home, and eat some butter-pecan ice cream. They had done it huh? Maybe Sunny still made a mistake or two during the performance but nobody seemed to notice, not even the judges, or maybe they just didn't care. Mari looked over at Sunny who was replicating her actions though without the smile. Smile and wave, smile, wave, smile, wave, etc. Her parent's were likely doing the same but she didn't bother looking for them. Kel and Aubrey stood near, clapping their little hearts out. Like clockwork he blushed yet still kept his composure. Mari quickly gave her own smile and blew him a kiss. Mari scanned the crowd and found Henry up in the front seats clapping furiously only to stop to give her a thumbs up along with an award-winning smile. While the duo gave their bows a banquet of roses was thrown at Mari's feet. As soon as it was over the lights once again blared on them and the crowd gave their thunderous applause as cheers boomed across the theater. As Mari played her final notes and the sound of Sunny's violin slowly faded away the lights dimmed on them as their duet came to its end.
